We don't need to shut them down, just make them put their name on their patented products.

If Monsanto wants the revenue stream let them blaze their name on these marvels of science and let the free market work, advertise the %$#@ and let consumer choice dictate what we swallow for whom.

Pamela I agree their name should be on their stuff, because I would not buy it! Unfortunately this is not the case.

I don't agree with you that we do not need to shut them down. I have seeded several articles on Monsanto including my 1st one that I did research on and found out scientists were saying what they are doing is wrong because they do not know what the effects are I put links to these sites in my comment.

Three counties have banned Monsanto in California.

The Supreme Court made a ruling recently on Monsanto Alfalfa, it wasn't as good as I would like to hear, but it is a very small step in the right direction.

There is also a ban on owning patents on food in I believe it is England. The seed that they altered in corn has roundup ready a pesticide in the seed itself. Their corn is transplanting itself into other farmers fields and contaminating them, yet they are suing the farmers and getting their property this includes organic farms!! It is basically a patented weed, we should be suing them for contaminating our country.

Many countries are banning GE/GM foods if Monsanto's crop continues to contaminate our farms we will not be able to sell our food to other countries.

Besides the stuff that is happening with Corexit in the Gulf, this is another experiment that is being conducted in the US and Canada on our food. One that we have no voice in saying stop this!!

Good for you; it's an education you need to search for but one that will serve you well, I've done a fair share of GMO research as well and am keenly aware of the risks. I'll check out your link and you can look at the resources page of my site and we'll see if we aren't on the same page.

There is also a ban on owning patents on food in I believe it is England.

The EU limits GMO planting and restrict most imported GMO as animal fee, but the UK has the biggest contingent of Monsanto front groups, politicians, PR and lackeys in Europe. It's not clear what the reference is there but some countries do ban all GMO.

Monsanto together with the WTO have worked under the guise of "Free Trade" to impose the will of this self appointed bureaucracy to override Soverign food laws and force countries to accept these. Hillary at State helps push agribusiness and Monsanto as trade too.

we should be suing them for contaminating our country.

We should, but the game was rigged from the beginning and Monsanto learned well the price of polluting so unlike their PCB's they introduced this stuff with a blanket waiver of deregulation and a fee attached to the contaminant.

Pretty clever in a very evil way, but Monsanto didn't do this all alone. It all took the help of Congress and bipartisan Members and Presidents to force it on us. Gotta wonder where the public service is, eh?

this is another experiment that is being conducted in the US and Canada on our food. One that we have no voice in saying stop this!!

It is criminal and unthinkable but we are not powerless. Consumer spending is the bulk of the US economy so we can vote with our spending. We have more say than most individuals think and one by one, day by day and dollar by dollar we are changing it.

Right now corn, soy and canola are the bulk of the GMO ingredients and while it's hard to find processed foods without it there are plenty of food options without those.

Buy Local and know your farmer. Choose foods in their basic food state and choose packaged foods carefully. Switch to oatmeal from KIX. Boycott all unknown ingredients. Call the food company consumer lines and tell them you won't eat their %$#@ until there is a GMO Free option.

The explosion in organic foods and "pure" healthful options is being driven by consumers refusing to swallow so much %$#@. We have a voice it's just a matter of getting enough volume. :~)

I loved your video, you might want to check out the one I seeded on Alfalfa, I think that is the one that indicates 2 Supreme Court Justices have ties to them. One of them did not vote on it and the other, I believe it was Clarence Thomas did! It makes me wonder if he has voted on any other issues that have to do with Monsanto?

Clarence Thomas was a Monsanto lobbyist on his way to the Supreme Court. He was a deciding vote in the initial issue of allowing corporations to patent life forms so Monsanto can thank him for that!

Pam I am confused by that statement, I thought that the rulings are from all the justices that should participate. Are you referring to something in the past. I just recently (this year I think) found out about Monsanto and what they are doing. Was that all it took in this instance was one vote? Thanks :?

Don't trust pharamcuticle drugs unless they have bee out for over 20 years. Don't try anything new if death or cancer is one of the known side effects. :(

You will loose weightr and feel much better. After you go without High Fructose Corn syurp for a while if you eat it you will be able to feel how bad it makes you feel.

I agree with everyone above, the problem with health the effects are hidden in general ailments that people already have. If you look at my links above the 1st one I seeded had scientists arguing this. I can not find the original article I had read on it's effects on cattle, but they had more ailments that the cows not fed with it as well as a decreased life expectancy.

The most alarming part was when I came across one statement that indicated once you had ate it one time, it would effect you for life!

Organic farms are also being contaminated unfortunately!

There are a few sources reporting on the health effects of the GMO crops and most come back to a limited number of studies and sources that are cited in the Sourcewatch summary below.

Effects of GMO ingredients are a great concern, but in all my years of research there's never been a study or reliable source that crossed my path suggesting a single exposure had lifelong effect. It's hard to imagine what the basis for such a claim would be unless it's confused with Mad Cow where the disease needs but one opportunity to enter a body. http://www.organicconsumers.org/madcow.cfm

Farmers report livestock sterility and deaths

About two dozen farmers reported that thousands of their pigs had reproductive problems when fed certain varieties of Bt corn. Pigs were sterile, had false pregnancies, or gave birth to bags of water. Some cows and bulls also became sterile. Bt corn was also implicated by farmers in the deaths of cows, horses, water buffaloes, and chickens.30

When Indian shepherds let their sheep graze continuously on Bt cotton plants, within 5-7 days, one out of four sheep died. There was an estimated 10,000 sheep deaths in the region in 2006, with more reported in 2007. Post mortems on the sheep showed severe irritation and black patches in both intestines and liver (as well as enlarged bile ducts). Investigators said preliminary evidence “strongly suggests that the sheep mortality was due to a toxin. . . . most probably Bt-toxin.”

I can locate sources for any true information or industry talking points circulated by the Biotech Brigade supporters. While biotech food is a huge issue there aren't so many players or so much available factual information that the key facts can't be traced to a handful of primary sources. There needs to be an investigation and light shined on corporations like Monsanto. Problem is, that here in the US, the FDA and USDA have ex-vice presidents, CEO, etc, working for them making sure regulation does not happen. Millions of Americans are eating GMO every day and not "allowed" to know it. Time and time again, organizations like Monsanto fight to make sure that food products are not labeled containing GMO. Here in America where I have the right to have an abortion, I have the right to free speech, I have the right to bear arms -- but I don't have the right to information about food that I am eating? As a result, I buy only organic foods. Thats my way of exercising my American right to choose. My bottom line to the GMO is that if nothing is wrong with GMO, why not let the American public know that they are eating it. All this sneaking around in the dark is frankly, suspicious.

The trademarking process where GMO grains are being patented and now meat, is a fight that has just begun. This has been allowed by our US government turning a blind eye. Check into the small farmer who can no longer "save seeds" due to trademarking infringement. How the farmers face lawsuit after lawsuit because GMO seeds were blown onto their land by the wind, and the corporation claimed trademark infringement, sued, AND WON. And when you think you have heard it all, look into the "terminator gene patent". My understanding is that Monsanto and the US government are co-partners on this. The terminator gene is where seeds are altered to produce only ONE crop before dying. Can anyone see what could happen if cross pollination happened? Where is the US Governments RISK MANAGEMENT expert on this one? Anyways, Good documentaries to watch are "Food Inc." and "Future of Food". As a regular American citizen, these documentaries certainly opened my eyes and had me asking questions and doing research. Also check out Seeds of Deception and the GMO Trilogy.

Check into GMO for your self and educate yourself on what you are eating. Remember when we were kids and they said "you are what you eat?" What does it mean if you are eating GMO foods that are banned in Europe and Japan?

Good Luck in your Research ~

After having actually looked through Monsanto's patent application, it sounds like great stuff to me. The idea that they are trying to produce healthier bacon and other pork products doesn't sound like an act of world domination to me. I also easily warmed to the concept of turkey bacon without a single conspiracy theory popping into my head.

Did anyone else read the patent application before forming an opinion?

      dbuker,

      Yes.

Scientist from the EU, last year, evaluated the data from the original scientific research that monsanto did in order to justify the FDA and USDA approving gmo food for human consumption.

      http://www.biolsci.org/v05p0706.htm

A normal study would require at least 2 years for approval of human consumption. Monsanto only did a 90 day study. If you read the study you will find numerous concerns for how the product effects mammals consuming the product. But monsanto bought and paid for their approval with political contributions and influence so no worries.

This has already been discussed on newsvine here:

      http://pameladrew.newsvine.com/_news/2009/12/13/3626093-three-major-gmos-approved-for-food-and-feed-found-unsafe

There are no conspiracy theories here only fact.

In the paper by the French scientists that you reference, the French scientist assert their opinion that the 90-day study design by Monsanta is insufficient to distinguish differences between the control group and the GMO-fed rat groups. Their opinion was that a 2-year study would have been better, and they may be right. It is very easy and commonplace to criticize an experimental design after the fact, once you have the data to analyze. This doesn't mean that the Monsanto scientist deliberately chose a 90-day study with malicious intent, i.e., to hide something. This just means that two groups of scientist disagree with study design. There are often sound scientific reasons to chose a shorter longitudinal study over a longer one, such as when measurement comparabilit and repeatability are factors. It is not a fact that a longer study would have been better, just opinion.

But, there is absolutely nothing in the French paper to suggest that Monsanto "bought and paid for their approval with political contributions and influcence." That isn't a fact, that's conjecture. It is a fact that the French work was supported by Greenpeace, thought. That fact needs to be considered.

Yes, Greenpeace was involved. They took monsanto to court and where finally able to get the "science" data released.

Monsanto refuses to allow independent third party scientists to evaluate and test their gmo products! Very few if any U.S. scientists based in a university setting will look at the products because if they do they violate agreements and lose their research funding provided by monsanto.

You're right, the concept of healthier food doesn't sound bad, but the reality of untested, patent protected GMO foods doesn't live up to the hype. What Monsanto hopes doesn't change what we swallow!

We're a Nation consuming record amounts of Roundup Ready corn and soy and based on the steady decline in America's health it's hard to leap to the conclusion that Monsanto aims to see our diet improve with secret ingredients as much as making profits with every bite we swallow.

One thing that is of even greater interest is that in obtaining FDA and USDA approval for their agricultural products was that they were "substantially the same" as conventional agricultural products and allegedly would do no harm and change nothing.

Now we know that they cross-pollinate with conventional plants.

Further now we see that monsanto wants to patent animals which are fed its products!!!

You can't have it both ways!!!

Two year studies for human consumption are the norm not opinion.

The measure of "substantial equivalence" was put into law to avoid any testing of genetically altered food crops. These are not tested or approved by the FDA, because they have a "deregulated status" by law.

The FDA and USDA get nothing but voulentary notification that a GMO product is being added to the food supply. It's a fine point but I don't want anyone to forget these do not get approvals from regulators they get a wave.

Biotech "regulation" t makes the MMS/Interior Department oversight of oil drilling look fierce by comparison!

Biotechnology Consultation Memorandum of Conference BNF No. 000001
      September 19, 1994...

Monsanto has concluded, in essence, that the glyphosate-tolerant soybean variety they have developed is not significantly altered within the meaning of 21 CFR 170.30(f)(2) when compared to soybean varieties with a history of safe use. At this time, based on Monsanto's description of its data and analysis, the agency considers Monsanto's consultation on this product to be complete.

      Pamela,

Mahalo for correcting my wording: "substantial equivalence". I just have to wonder how far using the excuse of "substantial equivalence" would go with my lovely wife if say I was so stupid as to go out and have an affair with another woman and she found out. Then I tried to explain myself by claiming but "dear, I love you, it was "substantial equivalence." Not far I suspect.

That said, now if we follow the monsanto logic of their patenting plants, then animals who consume their products, next they will demand a patent on you and me!!!

This link is a copy&paste from a 28 April 2010 article from GM Watch (without the actual URLs of the links).

The GM Watch article was a copy&paste from a 27 April 2010 posting of No Patents on Seeds.

Here is the PDF of the Monsanto patent (there's no link or URL in the article seeded here).

This research took me less than five minutes. Why didn't you do it? You could have at least linked to the 'primary' source of the article and you could have included the patent application.

A quick look at the patent application suggests (I skimmed fast) that Monsanto is trying to modify the types of fat in pigs and poultry through feed/feed additives from transgenic plant sources. I'm more concerned about their efforts to transform fats from "bad" to "good" than the fact that this transformation relies on transgenic plants.
